Screen Share or peek-a-boo
Have you ever been away from your desk at work or your computer at home when you wanted to access an important document? Have you ever wanted to show someone your presentation? Or, how about just wanting to share information with another computer? Or you are at your friend’s house bragging about your new grandchild and his/hers picture in your screen saver, but your computer is at home. Screen share will solve all these problems and more.
I was surprised to learn that there are so many choices to choose from when one wants to share information.  You can buy programs in a store; you can download and access them immediately off the world wide web; and you can bid on ebay, the list is long. Screen share can be pricey or it can be free. I’m no computer genius, I just get by, however I do know you get what you pay for in most cases.  So, it is important to know exactly what you want in terms of screen share.
Do not confuse screen share with share ware, they are two different things. Screen share is when one computer has an image that appears upon accessing or even acts as your screen saver. With screen share you can access this image with another computer, in another room or another country. That is a very basic and general idea of what screen share does. On the flip side share ware is a program, usually free, that one can use to do a myriad of jobs on your computer.
Typically a good use of screen share is when you are a small company and you want to show a prospective buyer that pie chart you spent half the night compiling. Sure you could fax it, but it may lose color brightness and clarity. You simply bring your lap top to work, dial in your screen share program, contact the other computers you want to view your pie chart and voile instant success. Now what could be easier?
Here is another example of screen share that I actually tried last Saturday at my bridge club. I have a new 2 month old grandson and like so many other grandmas out there I am proud as punch. The problem is my kids don’t seem to know how to use a camera, at least not one with film, so all the pictures I get come through my computer. I received a new picture on downloaded it as my screen saver. When I began talking about my new picture, everyone wanted to see it, but we did not have a computer. I instantly pulled out my Blackberry and in minutes, my screen saver was on the small screen of my cell phone. The picture was a big hit, but the girls seemed to be very impressed with my knowledge in obtaining same. So, I got double the fun, I bragged about my grandson and I showed off my computer skills.
