Wainscoting Installation Guide

Wainscoting refers to the wooden assembly that covers the lower part of a wall and topped with a chair rail. Conventionally, wainscoting has been associated with high quality wood and costly carpentry. However, with the right tools, materials and a straight forward guide, anyone could manage to try wainscoting installation during their spare time. The following are steps to follow for wainscoting installation:1. Choose what style of wainscoting you want by visiting a nearby hardware or home store. Panels normally come as pre-finished or ready-to-finish products. Pick the design that suits your home and fashion sense.2. Measure the perimeter of your house and divide it with the width of the wainscot to determine how many panels you will need for the installation. Also buy some spares in case of inevitable mistakes.3. Upon purchasing, place the panels inside for a few days to make it comfortable with the temperature of the house before the wainscoting installation. Wainscoting panels are very sensitive to moisture and temperature; it easily expands and contracts upon exposure so it is advised to acclimatize it before using.4. Choose a place to start like a room and remove everything including carpets, furniture, switch plates and outlet covers. This gives you more working space.5. Get rid of all baseboards and moldings on the walls and try to mark the studs since they will be very useful during the molding part of wainscoting installation.6. Using a level create a level line around the room. Measure up according to the height of your wainscot which most likely to be 42 1/2". Make sure that your wainscot is even all around the place. Use base molding to cover any height difference.7. Measure 1/16" from the corner and start the wainscoting installation. Check if the top is level with your line. You can either use adhesive or a compressor nail gun to install the panels.8. Install the wainscoting around the room maintaining the 1/16" space between each pair of panels while constantly checking if the top is leveled with your line. If one of the panels falls over an electrical outlet, you will need to measure where the panel hits the outlet and cut the panel to accommodate it.9. Use caulking to fill the gaps on each pair of panels. This allows the panels to cope with the changes in the temperature. Let the caulking dry and finish it using the same color as your wainscoting will make it virtually invisible.10. Lastly, install the baseboards and rail moldings.By: Denise Hudson
